Can Claude work with Xero?

Yes, and it is one of the better-connected general assistants for an accountant. Xero launched an official Claude connector on 12 May 2026 that brings revenue, profit, receivables, overdue invoices and cash position into a conversation, and says the data shared is never used to train models. Anthropic’s connector page lists it as read-only, so it can show the numbers but not change them.

Past the ledger, coverage thins. MYOB is available only through third-party builds, and we found no official connection to Xero Practice Manager, FYI or the ATO. DeskMate connects to all of them, and skills can use several in one run.

Where does Claude process data?

The Tax Practitioners Board’s guidance, TPB(GS) 55/2026, issued on 22 July 2026, says putting client information into an AI tool can be a disclosure to a third party. That needs the client’s permission first, and the Board recommends telling the client where the data will be stored. It also expects a person to check the output at each step, and to document that check.

Anthropic’s regional compliance page offers Australian storage and processing when Claude is used through AWS Bedrock, Google Vertex AI or Microsoft Foundry. That is a developer route, and it is how some accounting products use Claude onshore. FYI AI, for one, runs Claude through AWS Bedrock. How do approvals and records compare?

Claude Enterprise includes audit logs, a Compliance API and custom data retention, which is a solid base for a firm that wants to monitor use. What it does not give a practice is a fixed approval step that sits between the assistant and the ledger or the client.

In DeskMate, every write to the ledger and every client message waits for a person, and that step cannot be moved or removed. Each run records what it read, what it produced and who approved it. That is the documented check TPB(GS) 55/2026 asks for, kept as a by-product of the work.

What does Claude really cost?

The seat is the advertised part: about AU$28 a month on an annual Team plan. Each seat carries a usage limit over a rolling five-hour window and a weekly cap, and Anthropic notes that tools and connectors are token-intensive, so Xero lookups and Cowork tasks use it up faster. When a person hits the limit, they wait for it to reset, or the firm turns on extra usage, billed at API rates from prepaid credits that can top up automatically.

At API rates, Sonnet 5 costs about AU$2.81 per million tokens read and AU$14.04 per million written; Opus 5.5 is double that. Enterprise bills every token at those rates on top of the seat, and needs at least 20 seats on an annual term, so a 10-person practice would pay for 10 empty seats: about AU$562 a month before any use.

A worked example, from those published rates: if a run reads about 200,000 tokens of a client’s records and writes 10,000, it costs about AU$0.70 on Sonnet 5. A daily run for 150 clients is about 3,150 runs, roughly AU$2,200 a month, or about AU$4,400 on Opus 5.5. That is our arithmetic, not an Anthropic quote, and a run could be larger or smaller.
